Getting Help and Reporting a Problem
Something broke, an idea came to you, or you have a question. Return has a Support form for all three. This article explains where it is, what it sends, and what happens next.
Where the form is
Open Settings → Support. You can get there in several ways:
- Type
/feedbackin the command bar (/bugand/supportwork too). - On a Mac, use Help → Report a Problem or Help → Suggest an Idea in the menu bar.
- Open Settings → About and click Report a problem or send feedback.
- Next to an unexpected error, click Report this problem (on an error notification the button is simply Report). The form opens with a short note about where the error happened.
The form is a page in Settings, not a pop-up. You can switch back to your document, reproduce the problem, take a screenshot, and come back. Your draft stays where you left it, even if Return is restarted. Only screenshots do not survive a restart; the form tells you if some were lost.
Filling it in
- Pick a type: Problem, Idea or Question.
- Describe it. For a problem, what happened and what you expected is the most useful thing you can write.
- Add your email if you want a reply. It is optional, but without it we cannot answer. If you are signed in, it is filled in for you.
- Add screenshots if they help, up to four.
- Decide whether to include technical details. The option is on by default.
What is sent, and what is never sent
Nothing leaves your computer until you press Send. Before that, click Show exactly what will be sent to see the full content of the request, word for word.
The request contains:
- what you typed,
- your email, if you entered one,
- the screenshots you attached,
- technical details, if you left the option on: the app version, your operating system and its version, the processor type and model, the amount of memory, whether the local AI uses the CPU or the GPU, whether Return runs AI locally or in the cloud, the state of the local engine with the name, quantization and context size of the model, the name of the embeddings model, your plan, and the interface language.
The request never contains your documents, your chats, file names or file paths. Return does not add any of these on its own. If an error message mentioned a file, the form replaces that part with a placeholder.
Our server does not store your IP address or your browser identification with the request. Screenshots are deleted after 90 days. The text of a request is kept for three years after the case is closed, as our Privacy Policy describes.
Screenshots
Take a screenshot with your system’s tool, then paste it into the form with Cmd+V on a Mac or Ctrl+V on Windows. The paste works with the cursor in the description field and anywhere else inside the form. Add image opens a file picker instead. PNG, JPEG and WebP files are accepted.
A screenshot shows whatever was on your screen, which may include a client’s name or a clause from a contract. Check each screenshot before sending. To hide part of one, click Redact under the thumbnail, drag a rectangle over the area, and click Apply. The rectangle is painted solid black into the image; it is not a blur and cannot be undone afterwards. Remove drops a screenshot entirely.
Every screenshot is re-saved by Return before sending, so file names and hidden image metadata are not included.
After you press Send
You get a reference number, for example #7K3M2QX4. We reply by email to the address you gave, and we quote that number in the subject line.
If the request could not be sent, for example because you are offline, the form keeps your draft and offers Copy report. Paste the text into an email to [email protected] and attach the screenshots by hand. Copy address puts the email address on your clipboard.
Writing to us directly
You can always email [email protected] instead, for example when Return does not start at all. Mention your app version and operating system; that is what the form would have sent for you.
