Three steps, one NDA.

The demo above, step by step. Analyze finds the clauses, Ask explains them with citations, Fix rewrites them where they sit.

Drop a contract. Get a map of what matters.

PDF, DOCX or plain text. Return converts it to Markdown and leaves the original untouched. Run Risk Assessment and every finding lands beside its clause.

  1. DropDrag a PDF, Word, ODT, RTF or HTML file into the workspace.
  2. ConvertAutomatic conversion to Markdown. Original preserved.
  3. ReviewColour-coded findings next to the text. Red = risk. Amber = needs attention. No flag = nothing found.

Ask about the contract. Answers cite the clause.

The agent reads the open document section by section and, with semantic search on, pulls related passages from the rest of your folder. A citation links to the section it comes from. Click it and the editor jumps there.

Passages from other files come labelled with the file name and section.

Rewrites land in the document. Nothing changes until you accept.

Return proposes the new wording inline, old text struck through, new text beside it. Accept or reject. An accepted change is ordinary text you can keep editing, and undo takes it back.

Try it: accept or reject.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account?

No. Return works without an account: download it, open a folder, and the built-in local AI is ready. You sign in only if you upgrade to Pro for cloud AI, with a one-time code sent to your email. There is no password to create.

What do I need to run it?

An Apple Silicon Mac on macOS 14 or later, or a 64-bit PC on Windows 10 or 11. After install you pick a local model in Settings → Models and download it once. The default is 5.3 GB and stays on your machine. We recommend 16 GB of memory for the default model. Before you download any model, Return shows whether it fits your computer.

Is my data sent to your servers?

Only if you choose Cloud AI. In Local mode, nothing leaves your machine - your documents, prompts, and AI responses all stay on disk. Cloud requests go through Return's proxy to Anthropic. We never train on your data and never store your content. Our server keeps only request metadata, such as token counts, for billing.

How can I check that it runs locally?

The status bar at the bottom of the window shows the mode and the model, for example Local and Qwen3.5 9B. In Local mode you can turn off Wi-Fi and keep working. The free app contacts our server for the update check, which you can turn off in Settings, and when you send a support request from Settings. Nothing else.

What is the difference between local and cloud AI?

Local AI is the built-in engine on your computer: free, unlimited, no account, and your documents stay on disk. Cloud AI is part of Pro: requests go through Return's servers to Anthropic, which gives you larger models for complex contracts, with 500 actions a month. Anthropic keeps cloud requests for up to 7 days for abuse monitoring and does not train on them. You switch modes in Settings and can go back and forth freely.

How do I switch between cloud and local AI?

Settings → AI → toggle between Cloud and Local. Local mode uses Return's built-in engine on your machine - fully private, free, no quota. Cloud mode routes through Return's servers to Anthropic (Pro plan).

What counts as an action?

An action is any AI request our cloud handles for you - a chat message, a Return, or a step the agent takes on your behalf when it reads a related file, runs a tool, or refines its output. Most simple questions take one or two actions. Multi-step research across several documents takes more. Local AI is always unlimited and never counts.

What happens after 500 actions?

Once you cross 500 actions in a month, requests go to a lighter model so you can keep working. Past 600, cloud AI pauses until your quota resets on the 1st. Local AI keeps working the whole time, and no overage is ever billed. If you regularly need more, join the Counsel waitlist above.

Do large documents use a lot of actions?

They can. A document too large to analyze in one pass is split into sections and each section is one action, so a long contract might cost several. Before it runs, Return shows an estimate (for example "~8–10 actions") and asks you to accept the cost. On the local engine there is no estimate to accept: it is unlimited and free, and the document is processed in as many parts as it needs.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. Open Settings → Account and choose Manage, which opens the Paddle customer portal. You keep Pro access through the end of your current billing period, then move back to Free, where local AI stays unlimited.

What's Counsel?

A tier for firms and regulated work: audit log, lockdown mode (no cloud routing) and a higher action limit. Not available yet. Join the waitlist above to be notified.
